Alabama State University’s Department of Rehabilitation Studies comprises two academic programs: Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling (MRC) and the Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Services with a Concentration in Addiction Studies (BSRS). Both Rehabilitation Studies programs are housed in the College of Health Sciences in the John L. Buskey Health Sciences Center, a three story, 80,000-square-foot building. This state of the art center offers 10 “smart” classrooms, six clinical skills laboratories, a Gross Anatomy Lab, a large general computer lab, three student resource centers, an interdisciplinary clinic, four conference rooms, and four research laboratories. Programs in Rehabilitation Studies explore models and theories that examine the social, political, cultural, and economic factors that define disability. These programs work to de-stigmatize disease, illness, and disability. Graduates provide pertinent assessments and interventions based on a holistic approach to service delivery. This holistic methodology addresses physical, mental, and emotional health, while taking social factors into consideration. Rehabilitation Studies’ graduates are social justice advocates who identify and address health care disparities and empower consumers to take charge of their lives. Our programs prepare students for professional work in the fields of rehabilitation, social and human services, allied health, and counseling.
